iPHONE 11 FIRST IMPRESSIONS

So.

Something unexpected happened.

I switched to iOS.

I really wasn't expecting this to happen, but sure enough, the iPhone 11 is sitting right in front of me as I write this, and it's my daily driver. I was surprised with this phone as a Christmas gift, which was highly unexpected, as I was saving up to buy this phone, but now I haven't spent a dime, and it sits in my hand.

Now

I have been an Android user my entire life, and never really thought of switching to an iPhone. But as time grew on, my thoughts began to change. I had heard wind of a smooth and clean operating system, that made it easy to go about your tasks on your device.

I was intrigued the more and more I looked into it, but some part of me chose to stay within the boundaries of the Android cult. After my extensive usage of the LG V30, and breaking the bottom half, I knew an upgrade was in order. And then the sweet thought of and iPhone in my hands drifted into my mind, like the slight scent of buttery biscuits. I looked on eBay, Amazon, and Craigslist for a used iPhone, one that had goo storage, and even better condition, as phones with shattered fronts and backs were no that uncommon on those sites.

Soon I finally settled my decision. To upgrade to the iPhone 11. It was a bold move, yes. But I knew it was the right one, I could feel it. Some time passed after my decision was made, and soon the surprise was sprung onto me. And an iPhone now resides in my pocket.

MY THOUGHTS

Wow.

When people refer to Apple devices as "streamlined", they aren't kidding. Everything about the iPhone makes it feel fast and most of all smooth. Smoothness is something a lot of people comment on when talking about iPhones.

They make sure that their OS is light and takes up minimal storage, and they really hone down on the finer details, like the animations, and the round corners on all of the apps, and the optimization for their taller displays. The gesture system is so clean and simple, that I don't want to go back to Android's simple button pressing system.

Apple makes your user experience a very apparent priority to them, as is evident while just doing simple tasks on the phone. Every single detail seems thought out and carefully crafted and put together.

Now.

This phone isn't perfect. The less than 1080p display can be a deterrent to some, and while it's nowhere near OLED level, this is one of the best LCD displays I've used. But one thing really bugged me about this device, and what I shouldn't find surprising, is the lack of customizability.

I find myself wanting to move the apps in a certain arrangement, or just stuff them into an app drawer, but then realize my limit has been met. As frustrating as this can be at some points, I don't feel that Apple should change it. This is one of the things that make the iPhone, iPhone. If you glance at someone's screen in public, and not seeing the notch, or the logo, and just see the home screen, you know it's an iPhone.

The familiar rounded square cookie cutter layout is just iconic, and if people can't stand it, then I feel that they should switch, or just accept that this is the Apple way, and it's not going any time soon.

iPhone is also known for its small physical batteries but excellent battery life. While this phone is supposed to have a great battery, it seems a little smaller than my V30, which had an average battery, and the minuscule 5W charger in the box is just adding insult to injury.

And last but not least.

The Notch.

People are still hung up over this thing. After the notches first unveiling back in 2017, people still flinch at the sight of it, and the Pixel 3 just ruined any semblance of acceptability that the iPhone had. After never owning a phone with a notch before, I was expecting a pretty rough first day with the black tab hanging at the top of the display, but I surprisingly just ignored it almost instantly, and just like the non-customizable home screen, I think the notch just solidifies the device as strictly Apple.
